Jose Mourinho joins AS Roma.

"Rome has a new Empror", Sky Sports announced in its breaking news, when American Hollywood producer and director owner of AS Roma, Dan Friedkin, announced that Mourinho is going to be Roma's manager from next season.

Gianluca Di Marzio of Sky in Italy said "It was a great surprise, a great secret, even for us and for everybody here in Italy". As per Gianluca Di Marzio, discussions between AS Roma and Mourinho started in the same day when he was fired from tottenham. Negotiations had beeen done under the radar in such a way that it caught everyone surprised.

Since then Rome has only one topic. Television, radio specials and fan channels running endlessly. Fans are euphoric and have forgotten all of their recent struggles. Sequence of injuries and poor results saw Giallorossi drop from third to seventh and sufferred humiliating defeat to minnows Spezia in Coppa Italia.

Something big was needed, but no one expected this.

The AS Roma stock surged as much as 26%, the most since November, and it was 19% higher as of 5th May, 5 p.m. in Milan, on volume that was almost 16 times the three-month daily average.

Former Roma director Walter Sabatini said "the arrival of Mourinho at a club like Roma is like an emotional earthquake". Mr. Sabatini added, "he (Mourinho) has won so much, who better than him to light up some hope? Let's even stop talking about dreams, now it's hope." Evidently Roma needed this earthquake. There was this long silence after new owner took over August last year and the club broke that with a decisive action.

Mourinho's previous stint in Italian football was historic one where he won unprecedented trebble with Inter Milan along with all other major trophies that were available to be won.

Roma have not won Serie A since 2000-01, during former England manager Fabio Capello's time in charge. Roma lost the 1984 European Cup final in their own stadium against Liverpool, also won the title in 1941-42 and 1982-83.

"Roma is a difficult club (to coach)," former Roma manager Fabio Capello told La Presse. "It's not enough to sign a great coach to win. You also need the players. "But he (Mourinho) exceeds in difficult places. I hope for Roma fans that he does as well as he did at Inter."

Massimo Moratti, owner of Inter Milan, when Mourinho was at Inter, said "Italian football will have profound and lasting benefits from someone like Mourinho. His irony, his intelligence, his provocations, his media presence, his enormous professional skills. I really like Mou's return. He amuses me. We needed it."

Moratti, revealed to Corriere della Sera, "Mourinho sent me a message. Concrete as usual. Three words. No more were needed." "He wrote: 'see you soon'." Moratti continued, he's happy for his former coach and confirmed they are in touch for the past 11 years. "There's esteem, I hope mutual". "For my part, undisputed. And I will confide to you that I'm happy for him. Very very much. I told him and I'll repeat it to him at the first opportunity. It's a good project, a nice square, good fans, a great adventure for the ownership of Roma. Mourinho will do well. Or at least, there are the conditions for this to happen." Moratti said, Mourinho's adventure with inter is in past but time with him is unforgettable. "It's in the past. Together with him, we won everything. The unforgettable season will remain, it's superfluous to underline it."

Roma's announcement came during Inter's current manager, Antonio Conte's interview with Italian tv show Le Iene. "It's great news for everybody, I wish him the best, except when he plays against Inter." Conte said. To the question 'Will they hug each other when they meet again?" "For sure, there is great respect between us," Conte added.

"Better in Rome, rather than Juve or Milan," Materazzi told La Gazzetta dello Sport. The centre-back was a vital member of the Treble winners in 2009-10. "I would have been more surprised if he had gone to Juventus. He would have to think a lot more about it, and for the Interisti, it would have been worse if he had gone to Milan or Juve."
